Rodney Keith Heitschmidt – 2010 Inductee

From the Desk of Dr. Rod Heitschmidt

Heitschmidt Rodney portraitRodney Keith Heitschmidt, son of Harold and 1996 Osborne County Hall of Famer Wilma Heitschmidt, was born October 28, 1944 in Hays, Kansas.  He grew up on his parent’s farm, located three miles west of Covert, Osborne County, Kansas.  His family included an older brother Roger, and a younger sister Elaine.  His grandparents were Nick and Tillie Heitschmidt and Chris and Lovie Sigle.  His Grandpa and Grandma Heitschmidt lived about one mile northwest of his parents’ farmstead and his Grandpa and Grandma Sigle lived about three miles southeast of his parents’ farmstead.

Rod attended grade school in the two-room school in Covert. There were five in his 1959 8th grade graduating class: he; Steve Miller; Sandy Murphy; Gerald Mitchell; and Marilyn Wirth.  He attended high school in Paradise, Kansas, graduating in 1963 with seven classmates: Janice McNeal; Ken Stielow; Harold Robbins; Warren Eulert; Terry Hoopes; Don Landis; and Larry Weilert.  While in high school he was active in all sports, FFA, and choir.

Rod’s college education began in the fall of 1963 when he accepted a basketball scholarship from Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in Hays, Kansas.  He retired from basketball after his sophomore year when it became apparent to him that he was vying for one of the last bench warming positions for the mighty FHSU Tigers!

Rod married his high school sweetheart, Judy Sue Thompson, on August 21, 1965.  Shortly thereafter they moved into married couple housing—Wooster Place—on the FHSU campus.  Sue began working fulltime for Farmers State Bank and Rod part-time for Dr. Jerry Tomanek, Head of the Biology Department and later President of FHSU.  Rod completed his B.S. in Botany in 1967 and went on to complete his M.S. in 1968 under the guidance of Drs. Tomanek and Gary Hulett.  He then accepted a research assistantship at the University of Texas (i.e., Dr. Calvin McMillan) to pursue his Ph.D.

Rod and Sue moved to Austin, Texas in August 1968.  Shortly thereafter their first son, Jason Keith, was born (October 31, 1968).  At about the same time, Rod received a 1A rating from the Osborne County draft board.  After visiting with the local United States Air Force [USAF] recruiter, Rod agreed to join the USAF under a delay enlistment agreement.  Thus, he abandoned his studies at UT at the end of the first semester, accepted a position with the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Weights and Measures Laboratory while teaching a Biology 1 night class at UT.  In June 1969, Rod moved Sue and Jason to her parent’s home in Paradise before enlisting in the USAF.  His first tour of duty was as a candidate in the USAF Officer’s Training School at Lackland Air Force Base [AFB] at San Antonio, Texas.

Rod was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in September 1969.  He, Sue and Jason then moved into a three-bedroom duplex at Columbus AFB, Columbus, Mississippi, for 52 weeks of flight training.  During this time, Rod and Sue’s second son, Dustin Lee, was born (June 17, 1970).  At the end of flight school, Rod was assigned the position of T-38 instructor pilot (IP) at Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, Texas.  However, before moving to Del Rio in March 1970, Rod attended two USAF schools.  The first was the Winter Survival & POW Training School at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Washington.  Rod declared that to be a valuable school but not a very pleasant one.  The second school was T-38 IP training at Tyndall AFB in Panama City, Florida.

In March 1970, the family moved into a rented home in Del Rio.  Later that summer, they moved into a three-bedroom duplex on Laughlin AFB.  They resided in that home until Rod separated from the USAF in August 1974.

During his time in the USAF, Rod served as an IP in M Flight, as a squadron scheduler, and eventually as a member of the Wing Standardization and Evaluation team.  Rod and Sue’s decision to resign his commission and separate from the USAF was extremely difficult as both loved the USAF family. They found the pilots’ and their families’ comradery were extraordinary, fun, exciting and uplifting.  Their time in the USAF was one of the greatest experiences of their lives.

Rod separated from the USAF in August 1974 and entered graduate school at Colorado State University (CSU) in September. Rod’s research focused on quantifying the effects of sulfur dioxide, as emitted from coal-fired electrical generation plants, on grassland ecosystems.  To this end, the family spent the summers of 1975 and 1976 in a trailer house near Ashland, Montana, where Rod headed a crew of eight in the conduct of an array of grassland field research endeavors.

Rod’s research was funded via the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory (NREL) at CSU.  He was officed in NREL and he considered himself a very lucky person to have had the experience of working with and learning from some of the finest grassland ecologists in the world.  One of the great things about NREL was that the mentors/professors treated graduate students as their equals. Working at NREL was truly a fun and exceptionally rewarding experience.

Rod graduated from CSU with his Ph.D. in rangeland ecology in August 1977.  He then accepted a position with the Texas Agriculture Experiment Station (TAES), part of Texas A&M University (TAMU).  He was officed near Vernon, Texas in the TAMU Chillicothe-Vernon Agriculture Research and Extension Center.  Although he worked at a number of sites across the Rolling Plains of Texas, his primary research site was the 3,600-acre Texas Experimental Ranch near Throckmorton.  The focus of his research was grazing management and closely associated disciplines. He was also a faculty member of the TAMU Department of Range Science.

In September 1990, Rod accepted the position of Research Leader of the 55,000-acre USDA Agriculture Research Service’s Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Laboratory (LARRL) near Miles City, Montana.  Research foci at LARRL were beef cattle genetics and reproduction physiology, range animal nutrition, and range ecology and management.  Rod’s research was focused largely on developing effective grazing/drought management tactics and strategies.  However, his primary job was “managing” the 50-member staff and the $4,000,000 budget.  For a more detailed understanding of the LARRL mission and operation, please visit www.larrl.ars.usda.gov/.

Rod retired from LARRL on December 31, 2006.  He and Sue have since moved to Pecan Plantation, a gated, golfing community located near Granbury, Texas.  Jason and his wife, Traci, and two children, Jarren (15) and Kacey (13), live in Flowermound, Texas.  Dustin died in a tragic automobile accident on October 14, 2004.  His widow, Wendy, and two children, Riley (14) and Reagan (10), live near Birmingham, Alabama.

Rod was a prolific writer throughout his career as he authored or co-authored 70-plus refereed journal articles, 50-plus book chapters and proceedings, 115-plus technical and popular articles and 85-plus abstracts.  In addition, he made over 135 invited presentations to scientific and lay audiences during his 29-year career.  He proudly served on many graduate student committees at both TAMU and Montana State University.

Rod has been the recipient of numerous professional awards including the Society for Range Management’s (SRM) Outstanding Achievement Award (1991), Fellow Award (2004) and Renner Award (2013).  He served as a Director and President (2002) of the SRM parent society, Director of the Texas section of SRM, and President (1997) of the Northern Great Plains section of SRM.  He received an Outstanding Instructor Pilot Award (1972) while serving in the USAF, the America/World Agriculture Award (2009) presented by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, an Alumni Achievement Award from Fort Hays University (1997), and a Friend of Extension Award (2005) from the Montana State Agriculture Extension Service.
